Bloom Mama

Mothers Supporting Mothers

Bloom Mama began with a simple act of compassion during one of the world’s most difficult moments—the COVID-19 lockdown. Early in the pandemic, Harriet connected with Joanie Fredricks through a local Community Action Network (CAN) team. Joanie, a respected leader from Tafelsig in Mitchells Plain, was urgently looking for baby clothes. Several women in her community were about to give birth—with no support, no supplies, and no family nearby. The reality was heartbreaking, and Harriet felt moved to help.

She shared the story with the Blossom & Bloom network across Cape Town, and the response was immediate. Donations started pouring in—baby clothes, essentials, nappies, pregnancy wear, birthing kits, and equipment. Within days, the women of Cape Town rallied behind mothers they had never met. This outpouring of kindness and solidarity sparked something powerful. From that energy and urgency, Bloom Mama was born.

Bloom Mama is an initiative by mothers, for mothers. It is driven by the shared commitment of its founders, Harriet and Joanie — both mothers who believe in community care. Since those early days, Bloom Mama has become a registered Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) and Public Benefit Organisation (PBO). Our core work remains in Mitchells Plain and the Cape Flats, but we now support mothers across nearby communities as well.

Looking ahead, we plan to expand our reach throughout Cape Town. Our vision includes offering wellness support, yoga, and postnatal care to mothers with little or no income. Every mother deserves care, dignity, and a strong support system—especially during pregnancy and early motherhood.

How You Can Help

We rely on community support to keep going. We’re always in need of donations—whether financial or gently used baby items. Your contribution helps us reach more mothers and babies, giving them the essentials and care they truly deserve.

Together, we can offer mothers a stronger start—and remind them they’re not alone.
